Adult Education Committee Chair Judith Turkewitz We are very proud of our Institute for Jewish Learning. We invite you to enroll in our Adult and Family Education Program classes and study and learn with us during the day or evening. It is my hope that each of you will find something of interest that will challenge you to grow in your Jewish commitment and enable you to reinforce your connection with our synagogue. Click here to see our full program. SRJC Adult Education invites you to participate in a new program being formed for women and men who are interested in becoming a Bat/Bar Mitzvah. The program will be a two-year course of study and enable participants to build their knowledge of Jewish learning. Topics covered will include Bible, Talmud, Jewish History, the Synagogue and the Home. Ronit Azulay, Director of Education, Rabbi Martin S. Cohen, Cantor T. Shalom Cohen and Rabbinic Intern Adam Watstein will teach the classes. At the culmination of study, there will be a Bat/Bar Mitzvah ceremony during a Shabbat service. The fee for this two-year program is $250 for SRJC members and $360 for nonmembers. Please click here if you are interested in participating in this wonderful program. WEEKLY CLASSES - Rabbi Martin S. Cohen Shabbat afternoon Shabbat Talmud - Tractate Ketubot and Tractate Sukkot Time varies with end of Shabbat; class is 90 minutes long. Presently working on finishing Tractate Ketubbot about laws of marriage and betrothal. Plan is to move on to Tractate Sukkot some time this fall. No previous knowledge of Talmud required. All very welcome. Location is movable, usually in local home. Sunday mornings from 10 am to 11am Rambam Continuing study of Rambam's great code of Jewish law. Presently focusing on laws relating to prayer and the synagogue service, but discussion is wide-ranging and touches on many different areas of Jewish custom and law. No knowledge of Hebrew required. All welcome. Mondays 10:30 am How Judaism as We Came to Know it Came To Be A course considering the way Judaism developed from the religion of the Bible to the religion we observe today. This is intended for people who have always wondered where Jewish rituals with no obvious Scriptural pedigree came from, and what happened to rituals discussed in detail in the Torah that seem to have disappeared entirely. Also, the origin of Jewish belief, the nature of Jewish faith, and the relationship of ritual and ideas. A good entry lecture series for those with no background in ancient history, but who are curious about the past and its impact on the present. Thursdays 6:30 pm Torah Study: Book of Exodus Ongoing study of Book of Exodus with Rashi's Commentary. All welcome. No knowledge of Hebrew required. Spirited, interesting discussion of text featuring a comparison of Rashi and the other traditional commentators. No previous experience with the texts is necessary, Come with a desire to learn. All are welcome. Classes continue through the last week of June 2009. |
