We have it all. There is always something exciting at Shelter Rock Jewish Center.
Tisha B’Av is a day of national mourning for various calamities which have befallen the Jewish people and especially for the destruction of Jerusalem twice in ancient times. As such, it is also an annual opportunity for us to reflect on the extent to which the world is still unredeemed and to consider the way we personally relate to Jewish history.
· Shabbat, August 10 – Mincha will be at 4:00 pm. Shabbat ends at 8:41 pm.
· At 8:41 we begin the Tisha B’av commemorative service. (You should eat your pre-fast meal prior to coming to services.) The service includes Ma’ariv and the chanting of Eichah. The evening of Tisha B’Av is particularly meaningful and satisfying. Weather permitting, the service is held outdoors in the Holocaust Memorial Garden. The venue is lighted by candlelight. Participants sit either on the ground or on low benches as Eichah, the prophet Jeremiah’s deeply evocative poetic response to events he lived through, is read aloud in a special trope used only on Tisha B’Av and only for Eichah, the biblical book of Lamentations. The whole experience is remarkable. Please come and experience it personally.
Sunday morning, August 11 – Services, including the chanting of Eichah, and the special Tisha B’Av Torah reading, and haftarah begin at 9:00 am. We do not wear tallit or tefillin on the morning of Tisha B’Av.
Sunday afternoon – evening, we will join, with our Hazzan, at Temple Beth Sholom at 401 Roslyn Road in Roslyn for afternoon mincha services at 1:00 pm.
Ma’ariv will be back at Shelter Rock at 8:30 pm.
The Tisha B’Av fast ends at 8:41 pm Sunday night.
Please join us for an appropriate observance of Tisha B’Av.
